Not only Porsche fans were excited about the launch of the new edition of the Porsche 911 from Lego. Now the white miniature coupe from Billund has finally rolled off the assembly line. Does it have what it takes to become a collector’s item?

You don’t have to be particularly well-heeled, a big car fan or even an automotive expert to fall in love with this car. Only 17,381 Porsche 911 Turbo 3.3 rolled off the assembly line at the Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen plant between 1978 and 1990. 330 hp. Unit price around 135,000 German marks. A car to dream and marvel at – at least for the vast majority. Dreams that have brought creative minds to the table in the global toy industry. There is tinkering and designing to replicate so-called dream cars as faithfully as possible. Lego is just one of many manufacturers that offer Lamborghini, Bugatti, Ford Mustang and some other iconic cars in miniature. In 2021, around three decades after the last 911 Turbo 3.3 rolled out of the hall in Stuttgart, the Danes are sending the sports car in elegant Grand Prix white into the race for the favor of nostalgics and the so-called AFOLs, the adult fans of Lego.

Turbo or Targa? That is the question

The Lego Porsche from the 18+ series, launched in spring 2020, consists of 1458 parts, packed in about a dozen numbered plastic bags. That’s a good 2000 blocks fewer than, for example, with the Lamborghini Sian FKP 37, which Lego rolled off the production line in Billund last summer as the third and so far last model in its Technic supercar series. But comparing the two superstars from Germany and Italy is self-explanatory. Especially since the 911 designer Mike Psiaki created a so-called 2-in-1 set for the Porsche. Lego fans can build the Porsche 911 as a classic turbo with a closed roof. Alternatively, the miniature sports car drives up in the legendary Targa variant, i.e. with a removable roof center section and the permanently mounted safety bar. But if you want to exhibit the 911 in both versions, you won’t get by with one set. Because the motto is: either, or. The conversion is completed in about an hour.

A Lego league: Mustang, Camaro and Porsche 911

Whether the Porsche 911 Turbo or Targa will achieve a similar cult status in the Lego universe as the popular one Ford Mustang, one will have to wait. Lego brought the classy sports coupe from the 1960s onto the market as a Creator Expert Set. With almost 1500 parts, the dark blue Mustang with the white stripes is more in the same league as its counterpart from Stuttgart, at least in terms of the construction time. Depending on your experience, you can get involved with Porsche, Mustang and the 2022 one Chevy Camaro look forward to four to five hours of building fun for a sporty 170 euros (RRP). As in the Mustang, the white Porsche 911 also has a lot of attention to detail. The seats come in a chic brown, the bulbous headlights, for many the trademark of the 911, have hit the designers very well. Doors, tailgate and the front hood can be opened, the steering wheel is connected to the front axle, which reduces the otherwise rather low game factor to a minimum. The 35 centimeter long model does not have any other functions. The Porsche 911 Turbo or Targa can be used. With most of them, the classic coupe should still end up in the showcase or prominently placed on the sideboard.

Lego for adults: build and admire

With the 18+ series, Lego has created a set series that is aimed directly at adult builders. The sets, which were previously at home in the Creator Expert theme world, are designed purely as exhibits. Like that one too bonsai and the bouquet from the new Botanical Collection or the model of the historical one Crocodile Locomotive, a piece of railway history from the 1920s. Also the Lego Ghostbusters ECTO-1 was developed less for playful children’s hands and more for experienced Lego master builders and fans of the fictional ghostbuster series from the 1980s.

Not to mention the Lego Coliseum (available here), which with more than 9000 parts should burst even the most robust childish patience.
