Lawyers vote against wearing the veil and all religious symbols to plead

The bar of Lyon, second in France, bringing together 4,000 lawyers, has modified its rules of procedure. The Council of the Lyon Bar Association has just voted “for the prohibition of the wearing of the veil and of all religious, philosophical and political signs with the lawyer’s robe” to plead before the court, reports Lyon Capital.

In the “pleadings” article of these regulations, it is now stipulated that any lawyer registered with the Lyon bar “must wear court attire before all administrative or disciplinary courts and bodies. The lawyer may not wear with the robe any sign manifesting a religious, philosophical or political affiliation or opinion”.

This decision was taken following a national debate in which 28 bars have already positioned themselves.
