North Korean missile test series continues. Shortly after a US aircraft carrier arrived in the region, North Korea fired a ballistic missile east into the open sea.
North Korea has fired another ballistic missile, South Korea said. The short-range missile was shot east into the open sea, the South Korean news agency Yonhap reported, citing the military. Further details were not initially published. It also remained unclear what type of rocket it was exactly.
The missile launch came days after a nuclear-powered US aircraft carrier arrived in the region. He is to take part in a planned naval maneuver by South Korea with the United States off the Korean Peninsula. The maneuver is also intended to serve as a deterrent against North Korea.
Series of different tests
UN resolutions ban North Korea from testing ballistic missiles of any range, which, depending on the design, can also carry a nuclear warhead. Most recently, however, North Korea fired eight short-range ballistic missiles from at least four different locations towards the open sea in June. According to reports, the government in Pyongyang could also prepare to launch a ballistic missile from a nuclear submarine. South Korea and the USA also fear that North Korea is preparing a nuclear weapons test. It would be the first such test since 2017.
Tensions in the region have risen after a series of tests this year. North Korea’s parliament recently approved a law on its nuclear policy. Among other things, this provides for the use of nuclear weapons not only in the event of an attack by enemy forces, but also in the event of an impending attack on the country’s leadership.
