With his laudatory speech, George Clooney moved Cate Blanchett, who received a Donostia Prize in San Sebastián, to tears.

Screen icon Cate Blanchett (55) has been awarded the prestigious Donostia Award at the San Sebastián Film Festival. The laudation for the Australian, who has won two Oscars in four decades of her career, was given on Saturday evening (21 September) by Hollywood star George Clooney (63), as “The Hollywood Reporter” reports. According to the report, the 63-year-old even moved his colleague to tears with his warm words.

“I’ve been lucky enough to direct you and act with you, and you always make everyone around you feel lucky that we have the chance to work with someone so gifted and kind, and I’m proud to call you a friend,” Clooney said, joining via video, whereupon a visibly moved Blanchett exclaimed “damn George” and wiped off her mascara.

A visibly cheerful Clooney went on to explain that he wished he were there, but he was in Venice, drinking alcohol and not wearing any pants. On site in San Sebastián, Blanchett then accepted her Donostia Prize from the hands of Oscar winner Alfonso Cuarón (62), who directed Blanchett’s miniseries “Disclaimer”, which will also be released in Germany on Apple TV+ on October 11.

Pedro Almodóvar and Javier Bardem also honored with Donostia Prize

The high-profile Blanchett is known to be equally at home in blockbuster and arthouse cinema. Her fans celebrate her appearances in popular works such as Peter Jackson’s (62) legendary “Lord of the Rings” trilogy or the Marvel work “Thor: Ragnarok”. But she also regularly shines in demanding works such as “Carol” or “Tár”. For her last appearance, she received her last Oscar nomination to date.

This year, three filmmakers will be honored with the Donostia Award in San Sebastián. In addition to Blanchett, the Spanish directing legend Pedro Almodóvar (74) will also be honored. His compatriot Javier Bardem (55) received the award last year, but due to the actors’ strike in the USA, he only picked up the award on September 20th accompanied by his wife Penélope Cruz (50).
