On Thursday morning, the last of the “last generation” climate activists were released from custody by the Munich police. At 9 a.m., the gates of the Stadelheim prison, where they were held in preventive detention to prevent further adhesive tapes, opened for six men and women. One person had spent the maximum possible period of 30 days under the Bavarian Police Tasks Act (PAG). Such a long prison stay will “remain the absolute exception”, according to the Bavarian Ministry of the Interior.
According to his information, a total of 20 climate activists had been taken into preventive custody for more or less long periods since the beginning of December after they had glued themselves to the streets in and around Munich and at the airport to protest against the government’s lack of climate protection measures. In some cases, the responsible judges even went beyond the period of detention requested by the police. This was justified with the “repeated announcement of the commission of further criminal offences”. Specifically, the activists are usually accused of coercion in road traffic because of their traffic blockades.
Because of the repeated sticking actions of the “Last Generation”, the city of Munich issued a general decree at the beginning of December, according to which the call for unregistered protests was already prohibited; Sticking to the asphalt was also explicitly forbidden on roads that are relevant to emergency services. This general decree expires on Sunday at midnight, it should not be extended according to the current status.
Most recently, members of the “Last Generation” in Munich stuck themselves on a street on Christmas Eve. According to the findings of the police, no further actions are currently planned, the German Press Agency (dpa) reported, citing the district administration department (KVR). Of course, the group had announced that it also wanted to block roads in Germany in 2023. According to reports, the Munich offshoot of the “Last Generation” has recently had a large influx and is preparing the new members for further campaigns.
