The climate protection group Last Generation has announced new actions. The members are particularly active in the capital. This is also evident in the Berlin judiciary.
In other major German cities, the number of procedures is much lower, as the query showed. Accordingly, the Munich I public prosecutor’s office has initiated 84 proceedings against several members of the Last Generation and other climate activists since the beginning of last year. Numerous other cases are still being processed by the police, it was said.
Proceedings against Last Generation in Berlin
In the past year and a half, 29 proceedings have been initiated against 157 identified suspects following Last Generation actions in Cologne. In Frankfurt, the public prosecutor’s office has so far had 72 cases. The Leipzig public prosecutor’s office reports 22 cases against 121 accused.
The criminal justice system has so far managed to process a large number of proceedings quickly after climate protests without any problems, said the Federal Managing Director of the German Association of Judges, Sven Rebehn, to the German Press Agency.
Some public prosecutors were unable to provide any information because criminal proceedings against climate activists are not separately recorded statistically. This is the case in Hamburg, for example, it was said. The climate demonstrators are usually accused of coercion and resistance to police officers, and in some cases it is about damaging property. As a rule, the proceedings end in fines.
