On the Lago Maggiore, a popular excursion destination in Italy, there was a major accident on Sunday: a tourist boat capsized and four people died.

When a pleasure boat capsized on Lake Maggiore in Italy, several passengers died on Sunday evening. According to the fire department, 19 occupants were initially rescued after the ship capsized near the town of Lisanza at the southern end of the lake. On Monday morning, the fire department confirmed that four people could only be recovered dead. The search was completed, the emergency services said.

23 passengers and two crew members on board

According to the President of the Region of Lombardy, Attilio Fontana, the “very serious incident” was triggered by a “torrent” that was part of a storm that hit Lombardy on Sunday. The 16-meter-long boat had been rented by tourists, Fontana said on Facebook. There were 23 tourists and two crew members on board the boat.

A video released by the fire department showed a helicopter over the lake with boat seats and other items floating on it. Located in Northern Italy, Lake Maggiore is the second largest lake in Italy and a popular holiday destination.
