Labor Market – Major Shortage of IT Professionals – Economy

The shortage of skilled workers in IT professions reached a new record level in Germany last year. A total of almost 68,000 jobs were vacant nationwide, more than at any time since the survey began in 2010, according to the Competence Center for Securing Skilled Workers (Kofa) of the employer-related Institute of German Economy (IW). At the same time, there were only a good 27,000 unemployed with an IT qualification. Due to the increasing expansion of the digital infrastructure in all sectors of the economy, the need for qualified specialists is increasing, and since 2015 it has not been possible to fill all positions in IT professions with qualified unemployed persons. The number of vacancies fell temporarily during the corona pandemic, but has been rising again significantly since 2021. The lack of specialists with a university degree is particularly great, with almost 34,000 experts missing last year alone. This gap cannot be closed in the short to medium term even with graduates.
