La Poste suspected of manslaughter after several employee suicides

An investigation for aggravated manslaughter has been opened against La Poste. French justice is seeking to know whether the postal group has any responsibility in the death of employees who committed suicide in 2017 and 2018 in the Rhône. Two La Poste employees killed themselves and a third attempted to end his life, the prosecution said, confirming information from Mediapart.

The Lyon public prosecutor’s office specifies that an investigating judge has been seized and is supervising investigations for “involuntary homicide aggravated by the clearly deliberate violation of an obligation of safety or prudence in the context of work, involuntary injuries in the context of work, moral harassment at work and endangering the lives of others.”

The three employees were employed on the Corbas mail preparation and distribution platform, in the metropolis of Lyon, then in the process of reorganization, and were on sick leave at the time of the events, according to Mediapart. The site was beginning its second reorganization of mail delivery rounds in just two years. Overhauls which had “direct consequences on the working conditions and health of employees”, according to an independent expertise from the Secafi firm, dated 2019. The labor inspectorate, for its part, had described the context on the platform.

Another case in Rennes in 2012

In 2012, a La Poste executive killed himself by jumping out of the window of a meeting room overlooking the busy Place de la République in Rennes. In a letter, he clearly accused his employer of being at the origin of his unhappiness. “The work I do every day doesn’t seem to be appreciated. I am constantly questioned about all my actions. All this professional anxiety has managed to take over my private life,” his partner revealed.
