Ukraine has sent an official request to the German government for deliveries of Taurus-type air-to-surface cruise missiles with a range of at least 500 km, the German Defense Ministry said on Saturday. “A request from the Ukrainian side has reached us in the past few days“, advanced the spokesperson, without wanting to give details on the quantities.
It remains to be seen now whether Berlin will accept or not, which should give rise to lively debates internally.

The German government has markedly increased its arms supplies to Kiev in recent months but has so far been reluctant about cruise missiles or support for Ukrainian air force, aid to delivery of F-16 fighters for example.

Already Storm Shadows
The Taurus is an air-to-ground cruise missile, carried by fighters and developed by the German-Swedish company of the same name. Due to its range, it would be able to hit targets far behind the current front line in eastern Ukraine.
The UK, one of kyiv’s main backers, recently announced its intention to deliver Storm Shadow cruise missiles to Ukrainebecoming the first country to provide it with this type of long-range weaponry.
These developments come as kyiv has been preparing for months a counter-offensive intended to push back Russian troops from the territories they occupy in Ukraine.
