Two people were killed in a knife attack by a man on passengers in a regional express from Kiel to Hamburg on Wednesday. A spokesman for the federal police in Flensburg said several people were injured. According to the information, the man attacked travelers with a knife shortly before 3 p.m. before arriving at Brokstedt station (Steinburg district).
Alleged perpetrator arrested
According to a police spokeswoman, two people were seriously injured in addition to the two dead, and four others were slightly injured. The police arrested an approximately 20 to 30-year-old man who was also injured in the attack – he is now in a hospital. There is no information on his identity yet.
“We have not yet been able to say anything about the background to the crime, we are in the process of getting an overview of the entire area of operations,” said police spokeswoman for the Itzehoe Police Inspectorate, Astrid Heidorn, at the scene of the crime. “We received an emergency call at 2:55 p.m. – there were a number of emergency calls from passengers because this man attacked passengers with a stabbing weapon.” Then the police drove off, the train stopped in the station area in Brokstedt. “We don’t yet know how many passengers were on the train, they’re being looked after first,” the spokeswoman continued, “we still don’t have any identities for the injured and the dead. That all has to be clarified.”
Interior Minister shocked by action
“It’s really terrible,” said Schleswig-Holstein’s interior minister, Sabine Sütterlin-Waack, when she first commented on the crime, “we’re really shocked and appalled that something like this happened.” The state police and the federal police are on site, the public prosecutor is investigating. According to the police, the background is still unclear. The station was closed for police measures, according to eyewitnesses, the situation on site is currently still very confusing.
