“All boar, no roar” – that’s how the foreign countries amuse themselves about Kleinmachnow’s search for the lion

Is this what German lions look like? In any case, the predator sought near Berlin is more likely to be a wild boar.

The lioness of Kleinmachnow is probably just a wild boar after all. The story of finding and not finding the supposed wild animal caused a stir not only in Germany. This is how the international press comments on the large-scale operation.

The sensation of Kleinmachnow, a free-roaming lioness, turns out to be more and more a debacle. After the alleged wild animal had been searched for days with great fanfare, and the large-scale operation had also made headlines abroad, those responsible had to admit that it was probably a false alarm. The lioness is probably just a mean boar after all. The Löwen-Wende caused ridicule and malice on the Internet. And the international press is sometimes amazed at the events in Brandenburg and Berlin.

This is what the international press writes about the lion-wild boar debacle:

France

“Liberation”: “Citizens of Kleinmachnow can bring out their dachshunds again. There is no longer a risk that the lioness, who was searched for 30 hours from Thursday to Friday by over 300 police officers, will eat her pet. The animal, which was filmed on Wednesday night by a resident of this exclusive district southwest of Berlin, was neither a big cat nor an April Fool’s joke. It was a wild boar, like nature lovers who unfortunately forgot to ask their opinion, from the beginning on claimed.”

“France 24”: “All boar, no roar (Only wild boar, no howler): Search for ‘lioness’ near Berlin ends, wild boar suspected.”

“Euronews”: “Police call off the hunt for the ‘lioness’ and now believe the mysterious creature was a wild boar.”

Great Britain

“Daily Mail”: “Our missing lion is actually … a wild boar: Dejected, the Germans call off the hunt for the beast in Berlin after admitting that it is NOT a lioness.”

“Guardians”: “It turned out that the roar of a lion in the Zehlendorf district, within the borders of Berlin, had been played through Bluetooth speakers by a group of young people.”

“BBC”: “The frantic search was triggered by a short, grainy video taken by a citizen in the early hours of Thursday morning. (…) Experts also gave advice on how to deal with the wild animal should anyone come across the animal, such as standing still and avoiding eye contact.”

Spain

“El País” (Spain): “The lioness wasn’t one”

USA

“NBC News”: “A large-scale police operation to search for an escaped lion near Berlin – involving thermal imaging cameras, helicopters, veterinarians and heavily armed hunters – encountered a problem on Friday: there is no lion at all.”

“New York Times”: “German authorities have ended a desperate search for a ‘free-roaming lioness’ that had caused panic in Berlin (…) It was unclear where a lion could have come from as it is not native to Germany. Although there are zoos, animal sanctuaries and circuses in the area, police said no one had reported a missing lioness. (…) Others mocked the chaos and memes abounded.”

“CNN”: “Authorities are ending the hunt for the lioness. No trace of the wild animal has been found.”

Italy

“La Republica”: “Lioness on the run in Berlin: False alarm, it’s just a wild boar”
