Kizuna in Schwabing: A vegan café for beginners – Munich

At first glance, everything looks quite ordinary. The chocolate croissants are stacked on the counter, behind them the coffee ripples out of the machine. So a completely normal café that has settled here on Hohenzollernstraße in Schwabing? Not quite. Anyone who hasn’t already seen the slogan “Kizuna – plant-based food & coffee” will notice when reading the menu at the latest: Everything in the Kizuna Café is vegan. At least almost.

The restaurant has been open since October last year. Managing Director Duy Nguyen is no stranger to the gastronomy scene: he also runs the vegan, Asian Ahimsa restaurant in Untergiesing, and until 2022 he will also run the Hippie Chay restaurant in Obergiesing. Now there is also breakfast from the house of Nguyen.

The Kizuna doesn’t offer much space, but it does offer delicious vegan croissants, for example.

The furnishings in the small café near Kurfürstenplatz are modern, bright and have an Asian touch – the passage door, for example, is made of bamboo. The space is rather sparse, there are seven small tables for up to 15 guests. Spreading out is not the order of the day – nor is it desirable. There is a laptop ban in the window seats. Here you should relax and not work. By the way, breakfast is served until 4 p.m. in the afternoon. Late risers should be happy.

What is there and how much does it cost?

If you come to Kizuna, you should bring time. Because everything is freshly prepared here. However, the wait is rewarded. For example, the “Loaded Banana Bread” with homemade coconut cream and peanut butter (7.50 euros) not only looks delicious, it tastes the same. The “Granola Bowl” with coconut yoghurt and mango puree (7.50 euros) or the “Turmeric Porridge” with chia, turmeric and coconut cream (8 euros) are also served in a visually attractive way. If you like it heartier, you can grab the “Breakfast Burrito” with vegetable mince, avocado and fried potatoes (10.50 euros).

Those with a sweet tooth will also get their money’s worth at the Kizuna Café. There are different types of croissants, for example natural, with a raspberry or chocolate filling (2 euros/2.20 euros). Even non-vegans will rave about the chocolate croissant. There are also cakes that change every day.

Speaking of non-vegans: Anyone who orders a hot drink, such as a flat white (4 euros), is given a choice: oat, soy or cow’s milk? Excuse me, cow’s milk?! Yes, you heard me right. An exception is made for milk. The Kizuna Café is a kind of vegan café for beginners who want to approach it cautiously.

From Tuesday to Friday there is also a changing lunch menu (9.50 euros). This can be, for example, a “vegetable soup with rocket and sourdough bread”.

Who do you meet there?

Anyone who lives in Schwabing and lives vegan has the perfect café on their doorstep with the Kizuna. The coffee variants with cow’s milk also attract non-vegans. This is exactly what the operators should be aiming for with their small exception.
