Kirill Serebrennikov at the Thalia Theater: The Charge – Culture

Ten years ago, the last demonstration took place in front of the Thalia Theater parking lot on Gaussstrasse. In 2012, it was radical Catholic followers of the Pius Brothers who accused the definitively blasphemous play “Gólgota Picnic” by director Rodrigo Garcia of blasphemy. In the same spot in Hamburg Ottensen, young people from Ukraine stood on Saturday evening, holding up cardboard signs and shouting in unison that Russian propaganda was being spread in the theater. He was referring to Kirill Serebrennikow, whose play “Der Wij” had its premiere that evening. In other words, an exile who, because of his critical attitude towards Putin’s regime, was subjected to fictitious trials in Moscow, was under house arrest for a long time, and was finally surprisingly released to the West shortly before the start of the war.
