King Charles’ coronation weekend is in May. It has now been announced that there will also be a star-studded concert.

King Charles III (74) and King Consort Camilla (75) invite the whole of the UK to their coronation weekend in early May. As Buckingham Palace announced on Saturday, there will also be a star-studded public concert at Windsor Castle as part of the three-day celebrations. The whole thing will be broadcast live by the BBC. In addition, “ceremonial, solemn and community events are planned”.

The statement read: “Their Majesties the King and King’s Consort hope that the Coronation weekend will provide an opportunity to spend and celebrate time with friends, family and communities in the United Kingdom and the Commonwealth of Nations.” Charles and Camilla look forward to spending the occasion in public, the statement said. These are the planned major celebrations at a glance:

Coronation service on Saturday 6 May at Westminster Abbey

The procession of the kings begins on Saturday 6 May from Buckingham Palace and heads to Westminster Abbey where the actual coronation of the King and Queen will take place. The service will be led by the Archbishop of Canterbury. According to the palace, the celebrations should reflect the current role of the monarch and look to the future. Nevertheless, one wants to hold on to “long-standing traditions and festivities”.

British media have previously reported that 2,000 guests are expected, significantly fewer than the 8,000 at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II (1926-2022) in 1953. After the service, Charles and Camilla will join senior members of the royal family join the grand coronation procession and walk back to Buckingham Palace. There the family presents itself to its people on the balcony.

Coronation Concert on Sunday 7th May at Windsor Castle

The Coronation Concert on Sunday 7th May is produced by the BBC and BBC Studios and broadcast live from the East Lawn of Windsor Castle. It features an array of “world music icons and contemporary stars” backed by orchestras and dancers. Free tickets will be raffled and made available to charities.

Which stars will actually appear has not yet been announced. At the same time, symbolic locations across the country will be illuminated with projections, lasers and drones as part of the event under the motto “Lighting up the Nation”.
