The activist group “Last Generation Austria” posted a video of the attack on Twitter.
The clip is viewed more than 160,000 times within a day. Numerous users comment and spread the video.
According to their own statements, the police were not on site at the time of the attack – but later cleared the street with a large contingent.
A police spokesman told the APA news agency that a report of physical harm had been filed against the unknown perpetrator.
Efforts are being made to determine the identity of the man.
During the protest, twelve activists were taken into police custody and released again.
