In the struggle for the post of Minister of Health, Karl Lauterbach, unsurprisingly, threw his hat into the ring. The SPD politician finds comforting words for Joshua Kimmich, who has Covid-19.

The SPD health expert and physician Karl Lauterbach would like to head the Federal Ministry of Health. “I’ve been in this field for a long time, so it would be a surprise if I basically didn’t want to do that,” he said on “RTL Direkt”. “But there are others who can, this is not about me,” he added.

Lauterbach also rated it as positive that the health department was assigned to the SPD in the traffic light negotiations. “We’re a social democratic party, that’s an important area for us.”

In the middle of the fourth wave of the corona pandemic in Germany, the Ministry of Health is of particular importance. Until the future leadership of the house currently headed by Jens Spahn (CDU) is certain, it will take some time: In the next few days he will “work very intensively on bringing about an excellent occupation in the social democratic departments,” the designated Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) said.

Lauterbach’s wishes to Kimmich

Lauterbach also commented on the case of Joshua Kimmich, suffering from Covid-19, and wished the national soccer player a “quick full recovery”. “The case shows how difficult it is to avoid Covid today without being vaccinated.” In the group of the unvaccinated, the incidence is well over 1000, wrote the SPD politician on Twitter and warned at the same time: “The risk is uncontrollable.”

Kimmich has tested positive for the corona virus, FC Bayern Munich confirmed on Wednesday. The previously unvaccinated 26-year-old was most recently in quarantine after having had contact with a person who tested positive.
