The West has had a massive influence on indigenous cultures, but the other way around too: the ethnologist Karl-Heinz Kohl shows where the traces of this exchange are still visible today.

Indigenous peoples are currently having what is called a moment in culture: from David Graeber and David Wengrow’s major study “Beginnings”, published in 2021, which dispels the myth of the primitiveness of indigenous cultures in 800 pages and was celebrated as a long overdue correction of world history, to the omnipresence of indigenous artists at the current Venice Biennale: With the global debates about colonialism and racism, the centuries-long oppression of indigenous peoples is also coming into focus.
