Two wins and a place in the knockout phase are not enough for the national coach. Julian Nagelsmann wants to win first place against Switzerland. Then there might not be a “big opponent” in the round of 16.

Julian Nagelsmann is determined to finish the group phase of the European Championships at home in first place. However, the national coach’s calculation for this interim goal has more to do with a possibly not quite as strong opponent in the round of 16.

!First and foremost, it has an effect both internally and externally when you come first,” said Nagelsmann on Wednesday evening in Stuttgart after the 2-0 win against Hungary, which put the DFB team in the knockout round early. “First place is important. We want to win all of our games.” On Sunday, the direct duel with Switzerland in Frankfurt will be about winning the group.

Gündoğan agrees with Julian Nagelsmann

As first in Group A, they might not get “the big challenge” in the round of 16, which will take place on June 29 in Dortmund. Their opponents would then be the second-placed team in Group C, which includes top favorites England, Serbia, Denmark and Slovenia. Captain Ilkay Gündoğan also declared first place to be their goal. “We want to be first. To do that, we need a win against Switzerland,” said the 33-year-old, who scored the 2-0 goal against Hungary.
