After losing the Europa League final, José Mourinho scolded the referee and didn’t want his medal. With that, the AS Roma coach made a young fan happy.

Some think highly of him, others find him unsympathetic and even arrogant. There is not much in between with José Mourinho. The successful Portuguese coach has polarized football fans for years. After the Europa League final, Mourinho once again showed that he has both sides.

His team, AS Roma, lost the final on penalties to Sevilla FC. Mourinho then showed himself to be a poor loser. After the game, he slammed England referee Anthony Taylor, who shot clean in a heated game, as a “damn disgrace”. And Mourinho didn’t want his medal either. After the ceremony, he immediately took them off, walked over to the fans and threw them into the crowd. Second places have no value at Mourinho.

However, the coach made a boy very happy with that: Mourinho gave his medal to a Roma fan who had watched the final from the stands and was no doubt just as disappointed. But after receiving the 60-year-old’s valuable memento, he beamed from ear to ear.

Mourinho’s anger at the referee was mainly sparked by a foul penalty, which referee Taylor had taken back again according to the video images. In addition, the coach would have asked for Lamela to be sent off. The defeat felt “unfair” to him, the referee “looked Spanish”, the coach complained after the game.

Mourinho complains about referees

Losing in the final saw Roma miss out on qualifying for next year’s Champions League. This prompted Mourinho to say he hopes Taylor will only referee games in the Champions League next season and not AS Roma’s Europa League games. With this tirade, Mourinho, who is known for his clear and not always fair statements to referees, may have lost further sympathy – as well as with his destructive tactical orientation in the course of the competition. For a young Roma fan, however, the Portuguese will probably be a big hero since this evening in Budapest at the latest.
