Jonathan Rommelmann from Krefeld and Jason Osborne from Mainz won the silver medal on Thursday (July 29th, 2021) in the Olympic rowing competition in the lightweight double scull. The German duo only had to admit defeat to Ireland, bronze went to Italy.

Since the Olympic premiere in Atlanta in 1996, no easy German double-two had managed to reach the medal ranks. For women, however, there was silver in 2000 and 2004. Now Rommelmann / Osborne made it into the Olympic history books with a courageous race in difficult wind conditions.

Rommelmann and Osborne overjoyed

“I can’t quite believe it. There was a lot of pressure on the kettle,” said Rommelmann after the competition at the sports show: “We gave everything and can’t blame ourselves. We offered the Irish a lot today, they had everything nice to fight with us. We are super satisfied and can’t blame ourselves. “

Osborne was also happy about the medal: “That means a lot for me and my home club, the Mainz Rowing Club. We were good up to the last 300 meters. We made life difficult for the Irish, that was all in the end inside. ” Rommelmann announced that he wanted to douse the medal. “There will be a beer or two,” said the 26-year-old.

In the end, Ireland narrowly prevailed

On the 2000-meter-long route, there was a pushing wind in demanding but manageable conditions. Rommelmann and Osborne were in the lead for a long time, but had to let the strong Irish pass on the last part of the route. The gap at the finish was only 0.86 seconds.

The German duo had already dominated the competition in the semi-finals and won by a large margin. Only the Irish Paul O’Donovan and Fintan McCarthy set an even bigger exclamation mark in their preliminary run with a new world record and ultimately also triumphed in the final.

The silver from Rommelmann / Osborne is the first medal for the German Rowing Association (DRV) in Tokyo. On Wednesday (July 28th, 2021) the German women’s quadruple missed silver. The quartet was on course for medals for a long time, but made a technical mistake around 200 meters from the finish and finished fifth at the end.
