Johnny Depp has surprisingly announced that he will be back in the director’s chair after 25 years. That’s what the movie is about.

Johnny Depp (59) has announced a project in which he is behind the camera: he will direct “Modigliani”, a film about the Italian draftsman, painter and sculptor Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920). He will also serve as co-producer alongside Al Pacino (82) and Barry Navidi (62). The “Hollywood Reporter” reported.

“Modigliani” will tell the story of the artist’s life in Paris in 1916. The film is based on the play by Dennis McIntyre and was adapted for the screen by Jerzy and Mary Kromolowski. Filming is scheduled to begin in spring 2023, but cast details are not yet known. “I am honored and humbled to bring the life of Mr Modigliani to the screen,” Depp said in a statement. “It was a life of hardship but ultimately triumph – a universally human story that all viewers can relate to.” Depp hasn’t directed a film since 1997’s The Brave. In 2009 he was only responsible for one music video as a director.

Another project in Europe

Depp also wants to start again as an actor after the public legal disputes with ex-wife Amber Heard (36). Only recently has been a first photo released from his new acting role. In the film “Jeanne du Barry” by Maiwenn Le Besco (46) he plays the French king Louis XV. (1710-1774). The drama is loosely inspired by the life of Jeanne du Barry, the last royal mistress of Louis XV. at the court of Versailles. The eleven-week filming began at the end of July and will take place at the Palace of Versailles itself and other palaces around Paris.
