Pop star Janet Jackson is back: The singer is currently stopping in Germany as part of her European tour. After the 57-year-old performed in the Munich Olympiahalle on Saturday evening, further shows followed in Cologne (October 6th) and Berlin (October 8th). According to concert promoter LiveNation on Monday, Jackson is also celebrating her 50th stage anniversary with the “Together Again” tour.
The younger sister of the “King of Pop” Michael Jackson, who died in 2009, was already on stage with the Jackson Five when she was seven years old, and like her brother Michael, it was her father who pushed her to pursue a career as a musician. She sang about domestic violence, AIDS, homophobia and sex. Her costumes and suggestive choreographies alongside male dancers were similarly provocative on tour. Janet Jackson made it abundantly clear that the youngest of the Jackson siblings wouldn’t let anyone put her in her place.
Janet Jackson is one of the best-selling artists of all time
With more than 180 million records sold, Jackson is, according to organizers, one of the best-selling artists of all time. She has won five Grammys, two Emmys and a Golden Globe.
In 2018, her latest single to date, “Made for Now” featuring Daddy Yankee, released on her own label Rhythm Nation Records, reached number one on the dance club songs chart. In 2019 she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Appearance at the Super Bowl ended in scandal
Twenty years ago, however, her performance at the 2004 Super Bowl made headlines. The show ended in scandal when Justin Timberlake ripped off her top and exposed her breasts. Conservative America fumed for weeks over “Nipplegate.” The apparently planned incident was later portrayed as a “wardrobe error.” Afterwards it was quiet for a long time.
In 2017, at the age of 50, she gave birth to her son Eissa Al Mana. The child’s father is Wissam Al Mana, an entrepreneur from Qatar, whom Jackson married in 2012. However, shortly after the birth of their son, the couple announced that they wanted to divorce.
