The ousted Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is currently in Florida. After his supporters stormed the government district in Brasilia, prominent US Democrats are calling for the “Tropical Trump” to be expelled.

After the attacks on the government district in Brasília by militant supporters of President Jair Bolsonaro, who was voted out, there are calls for the right-wing politician to be expelled from the USA. “The United States must stop granting refuge to Bolsonaro in Florida,” wrote Democratic US Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Twitter late Sunday evening (local time). Bolsonaro lost the presidential election in October and fled to the United States at the end of December shortly before his successor Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva was sworn in.

Democratic US Congressman Joaquin Castro also called for Bolsonaro’s expulsion in a CNN interview. “He’s a dangerous man,” Castro said, among other things.

Radical supporters of the right-wing ex-military stormed the government district of the Brazilian capital on Sunday. Hundreds of people invaded the Congress, the Supreme Court and the government seat Palácio do Planalto. Bolsonaro condemned the attack on Twitter. “Peaceful demonstrations are part of democracy. However, looting and raids on public buildings, as they took place today, are not included,” wrote the ex-head of state on Twitter. At the same time, however, he denied complicity: “I also reject the allegations that the current head of the Brazilian executive (Lula) accuses me of without evidence.” However, observers noted that Bolsonaro remained silent for a noticeably long time during the attacks.

Jair Bolsonaro has never made a secret of his closeness to Trump

In the USA in particular, the attack was strongly reminiscent of the storming of the US Capitol on January 6, 2020 by supporters of President Donald Trump, who was voted out at the time. Ocasio-Cortez wrote in her tweet: “Nearly two years after the attack on the US Capitol by fascists, we are witnessing fascist movements abroad trying to do the same in Brazil.” Bolsonaro has never made a secret of his political closeness to Trump. The media also called him the “Tropical Trump” at the time.
