Italy’s President Sergio Mattarella resigns in triumph

The standing ovation lasted six minutes. That’s a lot even at La Scala, Milan’s thrilling opera house. This time, however, the triumph was not for a tenor or soprano, nor for a conductor, at least not in the traditional sense. It was for an elderly gentleman who was standing in a box with slumped shoulders and, as always at such moments, seemed a bit embarrassed.
