The Chancellor’s Party is suffering: from the traffic lights, from its candidate and from itself. Over the years it has lost touch with those who could actually vote for it.
Kevin Kühnert has become known for his quarrel with the SPD. At the beginning of his steep but short career, he fumed, there should be something left of “this store, damn it.” Kühnert has now resigned as general secretary of the SPD for health reasons. His concern for the party permeates his farewell letter: Only an enormous show of strength could raise the SPD. The fact that such a talented 35-year-old like Kühnert no longer has this strength is Kühnert’s tragedy. But it also fits with the tragedy of his party, which is suffering less and less from the electorate.
