Seven dead in terrorist attack at synagogue in East Jerusalem
A Palestinian killed seven people in an Israeli settlement in East Jerusalem, according to police. The attacker opened fire on visitors to a synagogue. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu announced a decisive response and “immediate action”.
EA Palestinian opened fire near a synagogue in east Jerusalem on Friday, killing seven people. Jerusalem Police Chief Doron Turdscheman said the gunman was shot while attempting to escape. He confirmed the death toll and spoke of three injured.
A 21-year-old from East Jerusalem was identified as the attacker, who, according to the authorities, apparently acted alone. Turdscheman promised “aggressive and significant” efforts to capture anyone who supported him. The police also released a photo of a pistol that the man is said to have used.
The Magen David Adom rescue service said a 70-year-old woman was among the dead. A Jerusalem hospital said a 15-year-old was recovering after surgery. According to the Israeli Foreign Ministry, it was the deadliest attack on Israelis since 2008. At that time, eight people were shot and killed in a Jewish seminary.
The US condemned the act of violence. “We condemn in the strongest terms this apparently terrorist attack,” US State Department spokesman Vedant Patel said in Washington. “Our thoughts, prayers and condolences go out to those who were killed and injured in this heinous act of violence.” The act was “absolutely appalling”.
The US was unwavering in its commitment to Israel’s security; one stands in direct contact with the Israeli partners. Meanwhile, Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank responded with celebrations. Eyewitnesses reported militants firing into the air and pouring into the streets.
The security situation in Israel and the Palestinian territories has deteriorated significantly in recent days. A spokesman for Gaza’s ruling Hamas said the attack was “retaliation for an Israeli army raid” on the Jenin refugee camp on Thursday. The Israeli military came under fire during a raid in the stronghold of militant Palestinians. A military spokesman said they were answered with shots. Nine Palestinians were killed and 20 others injured in the clashes.
