The chancellor said so, as did his defense minister. But what follows from this? Chancellor Olaf Scholz said in the Bundestag last week that this government must correct the mistakes made by the Union’s defense ministers. “This not only includes halving the Bundeswehr and abolishing conscription, it also includes the largest austerity program for the Bundeswehr.” His Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said in an interview with the Süddeutsche Zeitung: “It was a mistake to suspend conscription.”
