Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi goes on hunger strike – culture

Iranian director Jafar Panahi is resisting his imprisonment. “I have been on a hunger strike to protest the illegal and inhumane behavior of the judicial and security apparatus since the morning of February 1,” the 62-year-old said, according to a statement shared by his wife Tahereh Saeedi and son Panah Panahi on Instagram on Wednesday evening published. First reported deadline about that. “I refuse to eat, drink or take any medicine until released,” the director said, according to the statement. “I’ll keep doing this until maybe they have to carry my body out of jail.”

The filmmaker is held in the notorious Evin prison on the northern outskirts of Tehran, which is known for its harsh prison conditions. Panahi was arrested last July and charged with alleged “propaganda against the system.” His arrest came shortly after he publicly protested the arrest of fellow filmmakers Mohammad Rasoulof and Mostafa Aleahmad. They in turn had asked the state security forces not to use violence against the peacefully protesting masses in Iran.

Panahi was sentenced to six years in prison, a sentence overturned by the Constitutional Court – but he has not yet been released.
