Just under two weeks after presenting a new medium-range missile, Iran has now presented its own hypersonic missile. The state news agency claimed that it could overcome all interception systems in the region.
Iran has presented its own hypersonic missile for the first time. The “Fattah” (Persian “conqueror”) rocket was presented by the Air Force of the Revolutionary Guards. President Ebrahim Raisi also attended the event.
According to the state news agency IRNA, the “Fattah” should be able to reach speeds of up to 18,500 kilometers per hour and fly 1,400 kilometers. This would allow them to defeat any air defense system in the region. So far, this information has not been able to be checked independently – evidence that the rocket is really that powerful has not been given.
President Raisi said the missile would “make the country stronger” and “bring security and stable peace to the countries in the region.” In November, Iran announced the production of the missile, which should also be able to carry nuclear warheads. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reacted with concern at the time.

Hypersonic weapons are systems that reach at least five times the speed of sound. Hypersonic missiles are considered difficult for interceptor systems to shoot down because of their high speed and trajectory.

The “Missile Defense Project” of the Washington Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), which monitors the development of missiles and interceptor systems, points out that the term “hypersonic” can sometimes be misleading. Almost all missiles with a ballistic trajectory would therefore reach five times the speed of sound at some point in their flight.

Hypersonic missiles recently made headlines when the Russian army fired at Ukraine with such missiles. Russia has repeatedly described its Kinzhal missiles as uninterceptable.
In May, however, Ukraine reported for the first time that a “Kinzhal” was shot down with the help of Western “Patriot” anti-aircraft systems. The US also confirmed the launch, but it remained unclear at what speed the missile was actually flying at the time of launch. Russia denied shooting it down.
In another Russian attack on the Ukrainian capital of Kiev, Russia used six “Kinshal” aircraft, according to Ukrainian sources, but they were all shot down by anti-aircraft guns.
