One of the most unusual careers in the film business is that of Maria Schrader. The 55-year-old was an actress in the theater and in German film productions for the longest time until she switched to directing at the beginning of the noughties. There she established herself as a specialist in Jewish and Israeli stories, her Netflix series “Unorthodox” about an ultra-Orthodox Jew who breaks out of her family was an international success and was awarded an Emmy in 2020. Above all, however, Schrader is an expert in depicting large, abstract topics in small networks of relationships. In her new film, she examines how artificial intelligence affects interpersonal relationships: “I am your human” is about the romantic encounter between the scientist Alma and the humanoid robot Tom.
