Interview: “Inflation is on the right track. But it is not defeated” – Economy

The head of the Austrian National Bank explains why the European Central Bank is aiming for two and not zero percent inflation. He also talks about the digital euro and his image as “Rambo”.

Robert Holzmann, 75, head of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB), maintains a direct style of discussion in the Council of the European Central Bank that some see as provocative. The economist, formerly at Saarland University and working for the World Bank for many years, believes: Inflation in the euro zone has not yet been defeated. Holzmann is non-party and came to the post in 2019 on the recommendation of the right-wing populist FPÖ. Holzmann: “I was asked back then and was the best candidate given my international experience.” He does not want to comment on the current election results in Austria.
