Interview between Lula and Macron, who “reiterated France’s support” in Brazil

Emmanuel Macron spoke Thursday with the President of Brazil Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, to whom he “reiterated the support of France” after the attacks carried out in early January by supporters of Jair Bolsonaro against several places of power.

“During our interview, I reiterated to President@LulaOficial France’s support after the attacks on Brazilian democracy,” tweeted the French president. “We reaffirmed our determination to act for the climate, biodiversity, our forests and against hunger. We will meet these challenges”.

Riots in Brasilia

On January 8, a week after Lula’s inauguration, more than 4,000 supporters of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, refusing his defeat, invaded and ransacked Congress, the presidential palace and the Supreme Court in Brasilia.

Lula da Silva has since dismissed many soldiers, including the head of the army, Julio César de Arruda. Brazil and France, with Guyana, have more than 700 kilometers of common border.
