At its core, feminism is about freedom—for women, men, and everyone else. Therefore, real equality cannot be aimed only at young, wealthy whites in the West.

They were angry. The women workers in the factories in Petrograd, today’s Saint Petersburg, could no longer feed their families, and they suspected why: the war that the tsar was waging at the expense of the population. So on March 8, 1917 (before the calendar reform, this was February 23), they stormed the streets, yelling first “bread,” then “peace,” then “down with autocracy.” Tsar Nicholas II did not take the protesting women and their male supporters seriously. Until shortly afterwards he was no longer a tsar.
