“Inside Out 2”
Record start for Pixar sequel
The troubled cinema year 2024 has its first hit: “Inside Out 2” set records at the start.
No film has had a more successful debut than “Inside Out 2” since last summer. No film has had such a good debut since “Barbie”, the highest-grossing film of 2023.
“Everything is upside down 2” despite the European Championship in Germany
“Inside Out 2” was also a huge success in Germany, despite strong competition from the European Football Championship in the country itself. According to the industry magazine “Blickpunkt: Film” 740,000 people wanted to see the animated fun. They generated revenue of 7.3 million dollars.
This makes “Inside Out 2” even more successful in this country than “Barbie”. Only the “Super Mario Brothers” film had a better opening in April 2023.
Record: “Inside Out 2” dethrones “Frozen”
Outside North America, “Inside Out 2” (original title) grossed 140 million US dollars – overtaking “Frozen 2” (135 million) as the most successful opening of an animated film. With worldwide sales of 295 million dollars, “Inside Out 2” is also the best-opening animated film of all time globally.
So far, the 2024 cinema year has been extremely modest. Potential blockbusters such as “Madame Web” and “Argylle” were a complete flop, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Story” and “The Fall Guy” fell short of expectations. “Bad Boys 4” at least got off to a solid start last week.
Not only the film business in general, but also Pixar in particular can breathe a sigh of relief. The once successful animation studio has recently been unable to match the numbers of the past. “Onward” and “Soul” disappointed at the box office, “Luca” and “Red” did not make it to cinemas due to the corona pandemic, and the parent company Disney released them directly on its own streaming service Disney+.
Like its predecessor, “Inside Out 2” takes place in the head of young Riley. During Riley’s puberty, the basic emotions of joy, sorrow, anger, disgust and fear are rivaled by doubt, envy, boredom, nostalgia and embarrassment.
