The technical possibilities to reach the electorate before elections are almost endless today. However, he claims that the Turkish presidential candidate Kilicdaroglu cannot send text messages. His rival Erdogan gave the order to do so.

The challenger to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has accused the government of blocking his text messages to the opposition electorate ahead of Sunday’s runoff. Kemal Kilicdaroglu accused the Turkish Information and Telecommunications Technology Authority (BTK) on Friday of acting on Erdogan’s instructions to damage his election campaign.

“They banned (them) because they’re afraid of us,” the secular opposition candidate said in a late-night TV interview. Kilicdaroglu’s campaign team had previously announced that they had sent masses of text messages to alert supporters to the opposition leader’s television interview.

“I was left completely in the dark,” Kilicdaroglu also tweeted. “I’m asking you, Erdogan, don’t you want me to stand in the elections?” The authority BTK initially published no statement. The opposition candidate’s allegations come during the final days of the increasingly bitter presidential campaign.

Erdogan is the clear favourite

Since none of the candidates achieved an absolute majority in the first round of the presidential election on May 14, there will be a runoff between Kilicdaroglu and Erdogan on Sunday. The latter just missed the majority in the first round – Kilicdaroglu was around five percentage points behind him.

According to polls, Erdogan is now the clear favorite in the runoff. He appeared on state television on Friday and gave an interview that lasted more than an hour. The election is considered the most important in generations.
