France’s premier tested positive

France’s Prime Minister Castex has been infected with Corona. Shortly before the positive PCR test, he had met with several members of the Belgian government. You are now in isolation as well.

France’s Prime Minister Jean Castex has gone into quarantine after a positive corona test. The prime minister’s agenda will be adjusted so that he can continue his activities during his ten-day isolation, his office said on Monday evening. Castex met his Belgian counterpart Alexander De Croo in Brussels that morning. This also went into self-isolation.

According to his office, the 56-year-old prime minister learned on Monday afternoon after his return from Brussels that a corona test on his eleven-year-old daughter had turned out positive. He then “immediately did a PCR test that turned out positive”. Castex completed the morning’s visit to Brussels with several members of the French government, including Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin and European State Secretary Clément Beaune. Belgium’s Prime Minister De Croo and four other members of the government went into quarantine following their contact with Castex. De Croo will do a PCR test on Tuesday morning, it said.

It is the first time since the beginning of the pandemic that a corona test at Castex was positive. The prime minister had received his second dose of corona vaccine in the spring. In France, several high-ranking politicians had tested positive for the corona virus in the past, including President Emmanuel Macron in December 2020. At that time, Belgium’s Prime Minister De Croo, who had met Macron shortly before, also had to go into quarantine. France’s Minister of Economic Affairs, Bruno Le Maire, and Minister of Culture, Roselyne Bachelot, were also infected with the corona virus.

As in many other European countries, the number of corona infections is currently increasing sharply in France. “The fifth wave started in a flash,” said government spokesman Gabriel Attal at the weekend. Despite the high number of infections, the situation in French hospitals is stable, according to the authorities. In the country, nearly 75 percent of people are fully vaccinated against Covid-19. The booster vaccination campaign is currently running for people over 65 and people with previous illnesses. From December 1st, 50 to 64 year olds can also receive their booster vaccinations.
