India: Rescuers search for more victims in the rubble after the train crash

Hundreds of people died in a serious train accident in India on Friday. Rescue work continued on Saturday. Railway officials said the Coromandel Express from Kolkata to Chennai collided with another passenger train around 7pm local time in Odisha state. A local resident reports: “I heard a loud bang. I was in the market. I came and saw what happened. And I tried to pull as many people out of the rubble as possible.” Pictures from the scene of the accident showed rescue workers searching for survivors in the destroyed wagons. According to the government of the east Indian state, this is the worst railway accident in India in more than ten years. Aid workers said the number of victims could continue to rise in the course of the rescue and recovery work. The reason for this catastrophic accident is still unclear.
