The summer holidays are just around the corner. If you want to get a bargain on your holiday, you should think carefully about where you are going. In some European countries, hotels and restaurants are only half as expensive as they are here. An overview.

Italy is still the most popular holiday destination for Germans abroad, according to a survey by the Allensbach Institute for Public Opinion Research (IfD). And according to the Federal Statistical Office, it is also easy to save money there.

On average, holidaymakers in Italy have to spend five percent less on restaurants and accommodation than they would pay here. April 2024 was evaluated as the comparison month.

In Bulgaria it is cheapest

In some other southern countries, the potential savings for German holidaymakers are even greater – for example in Spain (minus 26 percent), Portugal (minus 32 percent) and Turkey (minus 41 percent).

The cheapest holiday destinations compared were the south-eastern European countries of Albania (minus 54 percent) and Bulgaria (minus 55 percent). There are also many beaches there, but hotels and restaurants cost less than half as much as in Germany.

Price differences in Northern European Countries

Those who prefer colder regions in the summer will have to budget a little more for their travel budget. In Denmark, hotels and restaurants are around a third more expensive than in Germany (plus 33 percent), while the non-EU country Norway has a price increase of around a quarter (plus 23 percent).

According to the Federal Statistical Office, Sweden is comparatively inexpensive among the Nordic countries. Here, holidaymakers pay only two percent more than they would have to spend in Germany.

Of the holiday destinations compared, Switzerland is by far the most expensive. Food, drink and accommodation cost a whopping 49 percent more there than here.
