In the middle of Bamberg – strength the strong – Bavaria

When Ulrich Maly announced his departure, the Bavarian Social Democrats felt very close to their hearts. If, after the election debacles at the state level – as a rule – anyone without a notorious loser image should say something encouraging, then you could always rely on Maly. Confidence from Franconia. Without the mayor from Nuremberg? Many in Franconia looked to Bamberg. Andreas Starke is not blessed with this unshakable ability to self-irony, with which Maly of the Moody Party of Germany in Bavaria even forced a smile on bleeding lips. But someone who taught the comrades in the Franconian Arch-Catholic Bamberg how to win and self-confidence 15 years ago with north German nobility – he is also presentable. Even in the dark hours.

Or do you have to say: was it presentable? On Monday the Bamberg city council group “volt / ÖDP / Bambergs Mitte” put a letter on the fax. You don’t always have to like what they say, ambition and a thirst for recognition are at least not completely alien to the colorful group. Even concrete strong disciples (who still exist in Bamberg) are unlikely to claim that their arguments are completely ineffective. At least secretly.

In fact, even people who are strong – or for half of Bamberg: the “Andi” – can hardly deny that the city administration has made dubious bonus payments over the years. The local auditing association has attested. Also the government of Upper Franconia. And recently a law firm commissioned by the city itself. According to this, bonus payments to civil servants, such as lump-sum expense allowances, were “in the vast majority of the cases examined” simply unlawful.

Who should now certify this with a letter and seal? The vatican? And who should take on the “political responsibility” for this, as Bamberg’s colorful troop demands? The Bamberg rider?

It is true that Starke must continue to be regarded as a legally innocent man. Public prosecution investigations alone would not be a reason for resigning – because it is by no means certain that someone will actually be found guilty of infidelity in the end.

But it is just as true that an OB presides over his administration; and it would testify to greatness to admit serious mistakes by unmistakable signs as an OB. Seen in this way, Bamberg’s colorful troop is not wrong at all.
