Commemorating with dignity is one thing in Berlin. Because commemorating requires a clarity that this city can hardly offer. This has been a regular occurrence since Russia’s attack on Ukraine on May 8th: instead of being able to calmly celebrate the end of the Second World War, the city is now busy preventing confrontations between Ukrainians and Russians. It was similar on October 7th, when the 1,425 people who were murdered or kidnapped by Hamas in Israel a year ago were to be mourned. At the same time, 2,000 police officers were on standby in the city to ensure that this commemoration was not disrupted by anti-Israel or even anti-Semitic protests.
