Ikea rents out tiny apartments for less than one euro a month

Ikea is known for its low prices, but this offer is even cheaper than expected. For 99 yen a month, that’s around 77 cents, the furniture giant rents an apartment in Tokyo – a city known for very high prices. However, the apartment is very small even by Japanese standards. It measures less than ten square meters and is of course fully equipped with Ikea furniture.

The company is accepting applications from potential tenants until December 3rd. If you want to move in, you have to be over 20 and bear the ancillary costs of the apartment yourself. The apartment is located in Shinjuku, one of the major districts of the city. The lease runs for one year until January 15, 2023. The mini apartment is advertised by a shark. In the advertising clips, Hai Blahaj creates his vision for the small apartment with an Ikea interior designer.

Tiny also works with Ikea

With the apartment, Ikea wants to show that you can live well even in very small apartments. Ten square meters is not much, writes Ikea, but they have worked hard to make the most of the space available. “One of the keys is to make good use of vertical space,” the company said on its website. “By capturing space in three dimensions, new possibilities open up in a limited space.” However, this also means that the tenant has to climb a ladder. On the ground floor there is an entrance, a kitchenette, a bathroom, a washing machine and the workplace; a ladder leads to the sleeping area.

For ten euros a year in Tokyo

Ikea demonstrates its multifunctional furniture here. The Ivar storage system can be adapted to different needs by adding and stowing shelves, boxes, cupboards and even a folding table for office work. The small sofa can be converted into an additional bed.

The campaign with the apartment shows that the furniture store is taking the trend towards very small apartments seriously. Tokyo is one of the most densely populated cities in the world, which of course encourages the trend towards micro-apartments. Ikea is now proving that you can equip such apartments inexpensively with furniture from the catalog and are not dependent on custom-made products.
