“I have no pain”: Jürgen Drews talks about his illness

Jürgen Drews talks about his illness

Jürgen Drews wants to end his career as early as autumn 2021. Then there are several shifts, but a good two years later the time has come: the pop singer can be seen on stage for the last time. The disease polyneuropathy does not cause any problems for the 77-year-old in everyday life.

According to his own statement, pop singer Jürgen Drews, who suffers from polyneuropathy, does not feel severely restricted by the nervous disease. “In everyday life, this disease does not play such a big role for me,” says Drews in an interview. It is true that his gait is no longer quite as smooth as it used to be and he is no longer as fast as he would like to be, “but that is also a side effect of getting older”. In everyday life he has no pain, said the 77-year-old.

Polyneuropathy limits the ability of those affected to move. Drews made it public in 2021 that he suffered from the nervous disorder. Last July he announced the end of his career. “Since I’m at an age when others have been retired for a long time, I also said to myself: At some point it’ll be good,” explained the singer.

With the show “For the very last time: The big hit farewell” the singer officially ended his stage career on Saturday on ARD. Drews’ wife Ramona, his daughter Joelina and other big names in the industry such as Roland Kaiser and Maite Kelly also came to prepare a farewell party for the King of Mallorca. The show was recorded in Leipzig at the end of October. The host was pop singer Florian Silbereisen.

Drews had his breakthrough in 1976 with the song “A Bed in the Cornfield”. Actually, he had already announced his departure for autumn 2021. The postponement was due to scheduling reasons, explains the singer. On Friday, Drews released the album “Geil war’s … Danke Jürgen!”
