The 82-year-old husband of US Democrat Nancy Pelosi was attacked by a burglar in their home in San Francisco. His wife was not there at the time. According to media reports, the attacker was probably targeting the chair of the House of Representatives.

When officers arrived, the attacker “violently” attacked 82-year-old Pelosi with a hammer that both men had previously wrestled over. The attacker called out “Where’s Nancy?” several times, wrote the “New York Times” and the “Washington Post”, citing officials. “CNN‘ further reports that the man tried to tie up 82-year-old Paul Pelosi and then waited for his wife.

Paul Pelosi is hospitalized and “expected to make a full recovery,” a spokesman said. The speaker of the US House of Representatives, protected by bodyguards, was out of town at the time of the attack.

The San Francisco police initially did not comment on the reports and did not allow questions at a brief press conference. Police drove to the Pelosis’ home around 2:30 a.m., Police Chief William Scott said. When officers arrived, Paul Pelosi and the attacker were both armed with hammers. The man then hit Pelosi with the hammer in front of the police officers. The attacker is in custody and the motive for the attack is being investigated. According to the Wall Street Journal, the arrested man had previously spread right-wing extremist views and conspiracy theories on online platforms, including about the corona pandemic.
