It’s one of the most important races in the world, where – almost – anything goes: the one that leads to the White House. In a little over a month, on November 5, Americans will elect their next president. Face to face: Donald Trump and Kamala Harris.
Did you miss the latest news? Don’t panic, 20 Minutes is here to sum it all up for you in his “This is America”!
News of the week
The news of the week has a name: Hélène. The category 4 hurricane swept from the Gulf of Mexico late last week onto the southeastern coast of the United States. Florida, Georgia and North Carolina, in particular, were swept away. The results and images are apocalyptic: at least 200 people died, roads and entire neighborhoods were washed away by the sudden rise in water. It will take “billions of dollars and years” to rebuild, the government has warned.
Since last Friday, there has been a struggle to help the victims. A “day after” which was, as one might expect, invited into the presidential campaign. Donald Trump did not wait to attack the management of this crisis by the Democratic camp in power. “The federal state is not responsive,” said the Republican on Monday in Valdosta, a Georgia town ravaged by Helene. The one who threw rolls of paper towels to the victims of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico in 2017 also accused the government and the Democratic authorities of North Carolina of “not helping people in Republican areas”. Lie, retorted Joe Biden.
Punchline of the week
“ Thank you to all of you who are still here, and to those who missed “Dancing with the Stars”, that’s nice of you. »
This is how Kamala Harris’ running mate, Tim Walz, closed the debate between him Tuesday evening and JD Vance, Donald Trump’s right-hand man. The governor of Minnesota visibly appreciated that American viewers (and 20 Minutes) skip the famous dance show to listen to the fight between the two men.
This is the first time that the two number 2s faced each other, and the exchange was firm but cordial. Abortion, immigration, climate or economy, all the differences are covered, but almost in good humor.
The “statement” of the week
It is an understatement to say that Melania Trump’s autobiography, which comes out next Tuesday and is at the top of pre-sales across the Atlantic, is particularly anticipated. While waiting to learn more about the daily life of the ex-First Lady, a passage has already filtered into The Guardian. It concerns a highly sensitive subject: the right to abortion. “Why should anyone other than the woman herself have the power to determine what she does with her body? », writes Melania. She also says that women must be “free from any intervention or pressure from the government.”
A position which follows that of the Democratic camp and goes against that of her husband. Donald Trump believes that each state must be free to decide whether or not it wants to restrict this right.
What do the polls say?
We take the same ones, we start again, and we arrive at roughly the same results: like last week, Kamala Harris has a small cushion ahead of Donald Trump in voting intentions at the national level. According to Project538she is 2.8 points ahead of her rival, at 48.6% against 45.8%.
What about in swing states? In Georgia, the Republican still leads by a narrow head (+1.1 pt), as well as in Arizona (+1.2 pt). In four others, the Democrat maintains control but her lead melts, whether in Michigan (+ 1.9 pt), Wisconsin (+ 1.8 pt), Nevada (+ 1.1 pt) and Pennsylvania (+ 1.1 pt). +0.8pt). Finally, in North Carolina, the two adversaries pass the immunity totem from one week to the next.
On the agenda
We continue to eat up the miles. This Friday, Donald Trump is in Fayetteville, North Carolina. He will then want to make an impression on Saturday by returning to Butler, Pennsylvania, the same place where he narrowly escaped an assassination attempt in mid-July. We will then find him in Juneau, Wisconsin, then in Miami. On the Kamala Harris side, heading to Michigan this Friday, in Flint, we will then find her on Monday on the CBS show “60 minutes”.
