Hundreds of Russians are ambushed – entire unit destroyed

In eastern Ukraine, Russian troops appear to have suffered heavy casualties. The situation worsened especially around the town of Bachmut.

The Ukrainian armed forces say they have destroyed at least two Russian ammunition dumps and anti-aircraft systems in fighting in the east of the country. This was announced by the General Staff in Kyiv on Sunday. The Luftwaffe flew several missions. Location information was not given.

Heavy losses were inflicted on Russian troops in bitter fighting for the city of Bakhmut in the Donbass. There, a Russian unit with a strength of 400 to 800 men fell into a carefully prepared ambush and was “put out of action,” said presidential adviser Oleksiy Arestovich in Kyiv. The information could not be independently verified.

Russian-controlled Donetsk under fire

During the day, the Russian-controlled city of Donetsk came under artillery fire several times. A hospital was hit, the Russian state agency TASS reported, citing local authorities. Because of the resulting fire, the evacuation of staff and patients had begun.

The Ministry of Defense in London announced on Monday that some recruited soldiers were given a smartphone or tablet that used satellite images to show them their intended attack route and their target. For this advance they received fire cover, but rarely armored vehicles.

Commanders wait in sheltered positions

“‘Wagner’ members who deviate from their attack routes without authorization are likely to face summary execution.” The commanders would be informed via drone images from protected positions. “These brutal tactics aim to preserve Wagner’s rare reserves of experienced commanders and armored vehicles at the expense of more readily available convict recruits, which the organization considers expendable,” the British ministry said. Wagner also recruits new fighters in prisons.

Since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine at the end of February, the British Ministry of Defense has published daily information on the course of the war, citing intelligence information. In doing so, the British government wants to both counter the Russian portrayal and keep allies in line. Moscow accuses London of a disinformation campaign.
