Humpback whale stranded in New York – it is not an isolated case (video)

STORY: It’s not a common sight for passers-by and emergency responders at Lido Beach, in upstate New York. A ten meter long humpback whale washed up here on Monday morning. Unfortunately, the animal died shortly thereafter, says Don Clavin, of Hempstead City Council. “It’s a male humpback, it’s been five years since a whale has beached here and this is the largest we’ve seen on this coast in over a decade.” But it is by no means an isolated case. According to the US Meteorological and Oceanographic Administration, 18 large whales have stranded on the US east coast since December. The fate of the humpback whale in New York is now to be clarified by an autopsy. To prevent the next tide from washing the whale carcass back into the sea, the remains, which weighed several tons, were moved to a higher stretch of coast.
