The IOC has made safe access to sport for girls and women in Afghanistan a condition for the country’s participation in the 2024 Olympics in Paris. In addition, the International Olympic Committee required that Afghan teams at international competitions also include women who live in Afghanistan.

The IOC has made safe access to sport for girls and women in Afghanistan a condition for the country’s participation in the 2024 Olympics in Paris. In addition, the International Olympic Committee required that Afghan teams at international competitions also include women who live in Afghanistan.

The IOC executive is very concerned about and strongly condemns the Taliban’s recent restrictions on girls and women, it said in a statement.

The human rights organization Human Rights Watch (HRW) had previously called on the IOC to immediately exclude Afghanistan from international sport. Since the Taliban took power, thousands of women and girls have been denied the right to exercise, said HRW director Minky Worden.

The massive curtailment of women’s rights by the Taliban has repeatedly drawn criticism inside and outside Afghanistan. The IOC leadership called on the Afghan authorities and the country’s National Olympic Committee to respect the principles of the Olympic Charter against any form of discrimination. For the time being, the umbrella organization wants to continue to support Afghan athletes with scholarships in preparation for the Olympic Games.
