Hubert Aiwanger: How long does Söder want to hold out? – Bavaria

If Hubert Aiwanger were a member of the CSU and not the head of the Free Voters, Prime Minister Markus Söder would have had to throw him out of the cabinet by Wednesday at the latest. Hardly a day goes by now without Aiwanger spreading new nonsense about vaccinations.

He now told Deutschlandfunk that he would not be vaccinated and would not do what the “political establishment” expected of him. In addition, Aiwanger revealed that he was hearing more and more cases from his personal environment “that had to endure massive vaccine side effects”. He stays “the spit away”.

The calculation behind these statements is clear: Aiwanger wants to get over the five percent threshold with his free voters in the federal elections. For this he is soliciting voices from lateral thinkers and vaccination opponents, which can now be found in all political camps.

He doesn’t even have to pretend, because with his talk about the “establishment” he is all too happy to serve resentment against “those up there”, although as Deputy Prime Minister in Bavaria he only has Söder and the sky above him.

The Prime Minister now has to ask himself how much longer he wants to hold out Aiwanger. If he were rightly dismissed, this would mean the end of the coalition. If you disregard the fact that Aiwanger has been obstructionist for years when it comes to power lines and flood protection, the Free Voters in the government have proven to be easy to care for, not to say: submissive.

Söder will have to hold on to Aiwanger until after the federal election because otherwise he would travel through the country as a martyr.

If the corona situation worsens in autumn and Aiwanger continues to be celebrated as Sankt Unvaccinated from Lower Bavaria, then the time would have come to look for other partners. At the federal level, Söder is anyway in favor of the Greens.

He would also like to rule with them in Bavaria – if it weren’t for Katharina Schulze, the Green’s Instagram ice cream eater. Many in the CSU dread her more than Aiwanger.

But that could still change.
