When Meng Wanzhou returned to China a good year and a half ago, the state gave her a majestic welcome. At the airport in Shenzhen, home of the technology group Huawei, a crowd was waiting, waving flags, and state television showed a tearful crowd getting off the plane. In her speech, she thanked the head of state and party leader Xi Jinping in particular: He “worries about the safety of every single Chinese citizen, including mine,” she said at the time.
